Choosing the Right Breathing Air System

When working in high-risk environments, workers may be in need of breathing air systems to ensure their health and safety. Today, there are a number of different systems on the market with a variety of applications, all depending on the specific needs of the user in his or her work environment.

Breathing air systems are required in many of the modern world’s major industries, including the petrochemical, oil and gas, pharmaceutical, mining, tunnelling and energy industries. Here, the various kinds of respiratory protective equipment are considered essential tools that save lives.

The type of breathing apparatus chosen depends on a number of factors. With the undertaking of an accurate risk assessment of the environment, along with the demands of the job in hand, an appropriate choice may be made from a selection of breathing air systems.

First of all is the Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA). This particular type of equipment is worn by first responders and emergency services professionals such as fire fighters, and also by industrial workers who hare exposed to highly toxic environments that directly and seriously endanger human health.

Another of the most commonly used breathing air systems is that of the Airline Breathing Apparatus. This breathing equipment provides a supply of air to the wearer via a medium or high pressure hose that is connected to a stationary source of breathable air.

The supply of air is delivered to the wearer either continuously or intermittently, depending on the needs of the user. Some manufacturers of this kind of equipment offer the wearer a back up supply of breathable air with the addition of a compressed air cylinder to the original airline system. This is intended to protect the wearer if their main supply is disrupted.

Another option when choosing from a range of breathing air systems is the Air Purifying Respirator. These use cartridges or canisters to remove particles and contaminants from the air in the particular work environment, and are commonly used where the environment presents no immediate and severe danger to human health.

These kinds of breathing air systems can rely on the user’s inhalation to draw air through the filters in place, or use a blower to ‘suck in’ ambient air to meet the wearer’s breathing requirements. These are often used in the pharmaceutical and automotive industries.

Escape respirators are breathing air systems that are specially designed to, as the name suggests, escape from hazardous environments in a short duration of time, normally spanning from 5 to 15 minutes. These can be ideal for helping users escape from dangerous situations such as fires. They are also often used with the airline system as a ‘back up’ air supply in emergencies.

The final type of apparatus in the range of breathing air systems is the Chemical Oxygen Self Rescuer. This is an escape device that is used to help the user remove him or herself from situations where toxic gases and particles are present or where there is oxygen deficiency.

This differs from the other breathing air systems by using the chemical reaction between Potassium Super oxide and exhaled air to generate oxygen which can then be used by the wearer of the equipment. Due to its non-reliance on items such as compressed air cylinders, this kind of system is lightweight and compact, making it ideal in certain situations which demand such features.

In conclusion, there are number of different breathing air systems available on the market today to meet a wide range of needs spanning a number of industries. The choice all depends on the hazards present in the environment, the duration of exposition to these environments, practical aspects of apparatus use and whether the breathing system is used for work or simply as an escape option.

How Can We Increase The Safety Of Sports

Sports is a physical activity usually involving a competition and when there is competition the adrenaline of each player increases with time. Some sports are also played for fun, as a hobby and to build the relationship in a team. Nevertheless, in all physical activities the probability of getting injured is very high. Following safety measures will definitely reduce this probability and guarantee more fun. Knowing that you’re safe, no matter how much you get battered also relieves mental tension. The challenge, the adrenaline and thrill brings out the best in us and if combined with safety, it’ll take us all the way.

Protective gear is something every player needs to wear. It protects the body against internal damage, physical injuries and mental harm. Most of the sports like American football and boxing, involve a great amount of physical altercations. The team’s physical instructor makes sure that the boys are all geared up in every way possible lest there be an unavoidable circumstance. The gear is designed with heavy padding and protects the most vital parts of the human body like the groin and shoulders. Helmets are another important part of safety gear which protect the head, neck and face. Some players also put in extra pads to support themselves during combat, especially on the chest and thighs. There has been speculation about the over padding and the introduction of new gear being a hindrance during playing and restricting the joints and reducing movement. If with careful design where both safety and mobility is achieved, there is nothing like it.

Entering the battlefield without any protective gear can be a matter of pride for many but is also considered foolish. Certain sports like boxing may seem like a sport that does not require protective gear but you’re mistaken. Professional boxing require head gear, mouthguards and much more. Most boxers do not feel the need for protective gear as boxing is a game of strength and pride. But this is a misguided concept and safety gear not only allows you to enjoy the game but gives us the chance to enjoy it for a longer period.

Baseball is another sport where head gear is an absolute must. Imagine getting hit in the head with a fast moving ball coming at you with tremendous speed. It would be completely absurd not to wear any protective gear. Golf may seem like a perfectly safe sport but again getting hit by a ball travelling at high velocity especially when we do not know where the ball may land is not a pretty sight.

An effective way to increase the safety of sports is by educating the players. It is the fastest way of getting any information through to them. Some of the sports activities have a natural tendency to mould the player to become aware of his surroundings and escape harm. That does not guarantee safety and protective gear is again a must. Knee pads, shoulder pads, mouth guards, gloves and so on are some of the most important safety gear that one must have in every sport. All the sport events must make it compulsory for players to wear all the necessary gear or else they would not be eligible to participate. In the end what we want to achieve is adrenaline and fun which if blended with safety would give us the ultimate victory.

Things to Remember While Establishing a Gym at Home

Don’t buy physical fitness accessories blindly

On fitness, the famed cartoonist and creator of Peanuts comic strip, Charles Schulz had commented: Our life is a ten-speed bike, and most of the gears we rarely use! To a great extent he was right since many in their quest for a healthy body, do buy assorted gadgets, but rarely use them. And reasons are aplenty for such a futile fancy prevailing in our society. One among them is the lack of awareness because of which a person blindly buys physical fitness accessories with no inkling about its end usage. Further, in many instances, when the gadget doesn’t work as per expectations, there is no proper after sales-service offered by the vendor.

Be extra particular while making the purchases

Hence, while intending to shop for gym accessories, utmost care is the need of the hour to ensure that quality products of a reputed maker are chosen and also the purchases are made from an authorized dealer. Over the last couple of years, there has been a gradual rise in the number of home gyms and corresponding fitness accessories. The resourceful health fads prefer high-end products in design as well as the functions. By and large, makers of quality gadgets for home gyms do focus on customer satisfaction in their innovative designs. It would be ideal to spell out the end-uses of a gadget – whether it is for ground exercises, light workouts like stretching, Pilates etc. or vigorous sessions of endurance on treadmills and barbells.

Just choose what you exactly need

Among the post-workout needs is the towel warmer that one uses either to dry the perspiring body or after a shower. If a person visits the neighbourhood gym for the workouts, it would be ideal to choose the one that has a sauna facility. At home too, one can indulge in a refreshing bath and then use the towel from a warmer. The towel warmers come in various models, size and functional specifications. So the preference should be the one that suits the essential needs and the credentials of the gadgets and accessories.

Going online is a great idea to serve your purpose

These days, almost all the reputed dealers are providing their customers with high quality gym accessories at an incredible pricing through their online stores. When you conduct an independent research about gym accessories sellers on the internet, you will find a huge rundown of choices to make. Online gym equipment sellers are able to provide cheaper things in the light of the fact that they have lighter liabilities than those who are running physical stores. They need lesser demanding infrastructure, reduced manpower and various other unnecessary things to run the showroom online.

3 Treadmills For Runners

Looking for the best treadmill for runners? Runners need more from their treadmill since they put extra stress and strain on it.

They also need a stronger treadmill that can support them with excellent cushioning, strong motor and a super-touch deck – so they won’t get hurt!

While there are many great treadmills for runners out there, the problem is that many times these treadmill are expensive – $3000 and up.

But if you know where to look you don’t actually have to spend that much to get a good runners treadmill.

Here are 3 great options that would be ideal for runners – and they’re all under $1500:

#1. NordicTrack Commercial 1750

The NordicTrack 1750 has been a best-seller in the running treadmill category for a few years now. What most people don’t know is that NordicTrack upgrades it every year with the latest toys and entertainment gadgets.

The 1750 treadmill is built with heavier construction than their starter models including a tough 3.8 HP motor, extra long 60 inch belt and large 2.5 inch rollers (which help prolong the life of your belt and motor).

Plus you get adjustable cushioning – so if you need more protection you can turn it up. And if you want a more road-like feel, you can turn the cushioning down.

Another thing this treadmill has that many runners treadmills do not is the 3% decline (as well as a 15% incline). So it’s great for crosstraining challenge.

And you also get a full-color, touch screen web browser in the console. So you can surf the net as you run – a great way to add more enjoyment to your workout.

The 1750 also comes with the option to use iFit. iFit is a technology that connects your treadmill to the Internet. From there you can run famous world trails – like Central Park in New York or the streets of Paris. You actually see landmarks pass you by in the console screen – very virtual reality.

So overall the NordicTrack Commercial 1750 combines strong construction with a lot of entertainment options you need for long running workouts.

#2. Proform Pro 2000

The Proform Pro 2000 was a consumer magazine “Best Buy” last year – so it has quickly become popular with runners.

The Pro 2000 doesn’t have some of the toys that the NordicTrack 1750 has – like the full color console, adjustable cushioning or web browser. But you do get a large, easy-to-read backlit console, a strong 3.5 HP motor and a spacious 60 inch long belt.

There’s also a built-in tablet holder to watch your favorite shows as you run. And you also get an iPod dock to play your favorites tunes through the console speakers as you walk.

There’s also a top 12 MPH speed limit, which is nice for runners who really want to pick up their pace.

#3. Sole F80

The Sole F80 has been around for several years now and is a favorite on runners lists. Sole hasn’t really updated it in a while – so other treadmills are starting to eclipse the F80 in terms of value.

But it’s still worth a look. The main strength of the F80 is that both the deck and cushioniong are excellent. Sole uses CushionFlex cushioning – which has been shown to reduce impact on your joints by up to 40% (versus road running).

The console – while not multi-color like the NordicTrack 1750 above – is still bright and backlit. There is an iPod dock and several pre-designed built-in workouts to challenge you.

The Sole F80 comes in around $1499 – around the same price as the NordicTrack 1750. The Proform Pro 2000 (as of this writing) is about $200 less.

So while there are a lot of great runners treadmills out there, if you don’t want to pay $3000 and up, you really don’t have to. There are some great options above the give you strong construction, tough motors, protective cushioning and extra long running areas.

No matter what you decide, remember to listen to your body and only do what you can. If you’re new to running, consult with your doctor before you get started. Good luck!
